HOW TO USE MEGADISC
*********************
WELCOME to the first Magazine-on-a-Disc to be produced in Australia. We hope
it won't be the last, but that is up to you, our reading, viewing and
listening public. For a discussion of the reasons for MEGADISC, please
double-click the "Editorial" icon. For the how's, please read on...
We've tried hard to make this disc easy to handle, by using some excellent
utilities such as the one which brings up this screen. Most of the contents
of MEGADISC are as easy to trigger as this one, and those that aren't will
be carefully explained.
* Throughout MEGADISC, we have used a few conventions, or shorthand ways of
writing things that you should know about. They are:
1. When you are asked to "select" an icon, it means to click on it
once with the left mouse button. Once you've done that, the icon is
ready to be operated upon with commands from the WorkBench Menus,
such as OPEN, RENAME, DUPLICATE, CLOSE and so on. To de-select any
icon, just click the left mouse button once anywhere off the icon.
2. When asked to "open" an icon, you should double-click on the icon
with the left mouse button. This has the effect of, in the case of
a drawer, opening up its window; in the case of a program such as
NotePad, opening it for use; in the case of a project such as a
Textcraft or NotePad icon, calling it up with its associated
program; and in the case of a disc icon, opening up its main
window.
3. In discussions of using the CLI (in the CLIstuff drawer), you will
see mention of typing in various commands, which will be displayed
in a form similar to this: 1> type filename
Here the " 1> " indicates the CLI prompt which might have a number
other than 1; and "filename" can of course be any file (text or
graphics or whatever) appropriate to the discussion.
* Generally speaking, the way to access the various features of MEGADISC
is to double-click (open) any icon, unless it is one of the Utilities,
as described in the "Use.of.Utes" text icon. If you open a text file
it will appear in a second or two, and to move to the next page down,
just hit "Return". At the end of the file, press "Ctrl-C" to exit, as
you'll see at the bottom of the file. If you open a drawer, it will
open into a new window containing other icons which you can then select.
That should be sufficient for you to browse through MEGADISC at will.
Incidentally, if you should want to exit from reading a text file without
pressing Return till the end, simply press CTRL-C and RETURN. It should
also be mentioned that any icon with a question mark on it indicates
some kind of explanatory text file, usually for explanations of how to
use some particular utility.
* The PROGRAMS drawer contains a full System Demo version of the TRUE BASIC
programming language, which should be of great interest to anyone even
vaguely interested in programming, whether in BASIC or any other
language. There are also a number of demo programs of great interest,
complete with listings for your perusal. We are rather proud of being
able to bring you this feature, as it seems that no-one else in the
country can supply the AMIGA-specific TRUE BASIC language yet. You'll
find all the details necessary in the explanatory file in the PROGRAMS
window.
* The ArtGallery drawer contains a number of images in either high
or medium resolution and can be viewed by simply double-clicking the
icon as usual. To exit from any image click once in the top left corner,
as you'll be reminded in the dialogue box that pops up at the start.
It is useful to know that if you move any selectable icon in Megadisc
to another place, it may not be instantly selectable - to select it you
will have to click once on the appropriate utility (SeeAll for the images
for example) and then hold down SHIFT while you double-click on the icon
required. See the Use.of.Utes text file for more details of this, before
you start moving icons around and onto other discs.
* There is a utility on the main window call PRINTFILES which is, for those
interested, a "command sequence file" or "batch file" (i.e. a series of
AmigaDOS commands) which will print all the text files on MEGADISC one
after the other when you double-click its icon. So we suggest that before
you do so, read through its accompanying explanatory text icon which
describes its use, how to exit from it, and how to print only selected
text files if that's what you prefer.
* The format we've devised for MEGADISC is as manageable as we can make
it, and is set up for 80 columns across the screen. It would be possible
to use the 60 column alternative but that has fewer advantages. If your
WorkBench is currently in 60 column mode, you can change it to 80 by
selecting the Preferences icon, and on the left side of the first
Preferences screen, select the 80 gadget, then SAVE.
If you have any trouble in using the disc, or have any suggestions for
improving the format in any way, we'd like to hear from you.
In the meantime, we hope you get you money's worth.
